When & Where Did Great Oak Waldorf School Begin?
Great Oak Waldorf School opened its doors in the Fall 2009 in a small house on Spring Cypress Road in Spring. We started with 3 children in the Kindergarten. In Fall 2010 we began renting space at Good Shepherd Church in Tomball with one Kindergarten class, and have grown steadily and healthily ever since. In Fall 2025 we opened Phase I of our new campus in Tomball with 2 Preschool classes, 2 Kindergarten classes, and Parent-Child Bridge, while our Grades 1-8 classes remain in our space at the church until we are able to complete Phase II. Each month more students find their way to our school to embark on their own journey into this extraordinary education.
Where & When Did Waldorf Education Begin?
Great Oak Waldorf School is part of a worldwide movement of more than 1,000 institutions whose approach to education is inspired by the ground-breaking work of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). The first Waldorf school opened its doors in 1919 for the children of workers in the Waldorf-Astoria Cigarette Factory in Stuttgart, Germany. The innovative school attracted immediate interest among people seeking a new way of educating children and other Waldorf schools were soon founded. By 1928, the growing movement had spread to North America with the founding of the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City. In the last 40 years, the number of Waldorf schools and related Waldorf teacher development institutes has grown exponentially – making Waldorf Education one of the fastest growing education movements in this century.
